Unmatched Accuracy and Consistency

Capital vertical face veneer slicers are made specifically for the production or the finest face veneers in the world. Their precision, close tolerance cutting ability is demonstrated by the fact that they are the only slicers in the world capable of cutting veneers as thin as 0.127 mm and as thick as ¼ inch or 6.35 mm.

Massive Design

Our massive, over engineered, heavy design which extensively uses vibration dampening gray iron has set the industry standard for the face veneer industry worldwide for generations. It is common for Capital Slicers to be in daily use for as many as 100 years or more. We use Graphite Phenolic type replaceable main bearings and thrust washers that are good for twenty years of service, if lubricated as recommended. We use heavy duty main drive gears which give tremendous driving power and are engineered for long life.

Parallel relationship between the pressure bar and the knife is one key to smooth and consistent veneer thickness. Our many adjustments of the pressure bar to the knife allow the operator to “squeeze” the veneer which gives the veneer “body.” Massive truss bars allow for the adjustment of any movement in the center of the pressure bar in relation to the knife, caused by the heating of the pressure cap from the heat and friction of the logs. The truss bars allow the cap to be readily adjusted horizontally and vertically to keep a constant parallel relationship between bar and knife throughout the entire length of the knife. The knife bar is recessed to allow for stainless steel conveyor rolls very close behind the knife for the veneer.

New Computer Lead System

Capital’s patented Computer Lead System can save up to 25 minutes per shift when used with the Capital Flitch Master feed and thickness system. Adjustment of the lead allows for dulling of the knife during the cutting shift. Faster round up can be attained with the computer feed and thickness system by starting thicker and then shifting on the fly to the thinner desired thickness.

Blue stain free – Distortion free system

Our patented, Blue stain free – Distortion free system assures the proper parallel knife edge to the pressure bar. This increases both production and yield and produces a higher quality veneer and eliminates blue stain on woods containing Tannic acid. All surfaces that touch wood are stainless steel, UHMW, and Non-Ferrous to give a much longer working life and prevent blue stain.

Hydraulic Flitch Pushers

Four hydraulic cylinders are used to flatten the flitch securely against the flitch table, thus preventing thick and thin sheets of veneer toward the end of the flitch. This increases production by as much as 5 flitches per 8 hour shift and eliminates the need for operators to enter the machine when loading flitches.

The flitch on the Capital Slicer is held hydraulically on the flitch table. Hydraulic dogs allow the operator to adjust the flitch to different angles and cut down to 16 mm (5/8th inch) thick backing board.

Patented Vacuum Flitch Table

Capital’s engineers have developed a practical vacuum flitch table for use with expensive woods which have good veneer in the backing board. The backing board can be reduced from 16 mm to 7 mm minimum. It also decreases the time needed to change a flitch. ROI can be as short as six months.

The Capital Slicer is a high volume machine, making 80 to 90 cuts per minute with a thickness accuracy of plus or minus one-thousandth of an inch (.025 mm). Rugged and simple Capital variable speed main drive motors are used to give a speed range of from 30 to 90 revolutions per minute. Flitches are routinely changed in 60 seconds or less. An air brake is used to stop the machine quickly. The air brake can be controlled by a push button on the operator’s control station.

Capital, the original vacuum flitch table maker, announces its new generation vacuum flitch table installed at UPM-Kymmene Lohja, Finland. The seals are easy to install and will hold up longer due to their improved material. The vacuum flitch table is available with either remote extension dogs for cutting diamond back flitches or without extension dogs for flat cut flitches. Messy hydraulics are eliminated on the flitch table while new ideas decrease the amount of maintenance and improve the life of the pumps in service.

Blocking the flitches against the table is not required. Yield improvements of 7 to 10% or more have shown a very fast payback. Customers report increases of up to eight flitches per shift because of quicker flitch changes (30 seconds). Shim sheets from buckled backing boards are eliminated due to solid support during cutting of the last two inches improving the quality of your veneer. This also increases your quantity and consistency of veneer thickness for your customers, thus your customer’s yield goes up. Backing boards as thin as 7mm increase yield of valuable wood.

Hydraulic Tilt Pressure Cap

All veneer slicers must be stopped from time to time to whet the knife to eliminate scratches on the veneer. To reduce the amount of time needed for this periodic task, Capital engineers invented the Tilt Pressure Cap. It increases significantly the amount of veneer cut every working day by reducing the amount of downtime. It also allows easy access to the upper and lower conveyor belts for adjustment or maintenance.

This system enables the machine operator to open and close the space between the knife and pressure bar in a few seconds to a maximum of 6 inches (153 mm). Then the operator quickly returns the pressure bar to its previous position in precise relation to the knife. No adjustment is needed because it pivots on Timkin taper roller bearings.
