Unmatched Accuracy and Consistency

Capital Halfround Staylog Lathes are made specifically for the production of the finest face veneers in the world.  Their precision close tolerance cutting ability is demonstrated by the fact that they are the only lathes in the world capable of cutting veneers as thin a 1/200”(0.127 mm) and as thick as 1/6″ (4.2 mm).

“Rock of Gibraltar”

The massive heavy duty 72” (1828 mm) Capital Staylog Lathe has many improvements incorporated in its construction.  It uses heavy duty Graphite Phenolic type replaceable main bearings and thrust washers good for twenty years of service.  It uses heavy main drive gears which give tremendous driving power.  Large non-metallic pinions are used on the main drive shaft, to achieve quietness.  The knife bar, pressure cap, and main machine components are made form vibration dampening gray iron castings.  The Capital Staylog Lathe is mounted on massive cast iron face plate disks pressed on the heavy spindle sleeves which greatly increases longevity and accuracy and eliminates wear on spindles when cutting half round.

The lathe has automatic pitch that is designed without linkage or bushings so there is no possibility of play developing between knife bar and pressure cap.  Massive truss bars allow for the adjustment of any drop in the center of the pressure bar in relation to the knife caused by the heating of the pressure cap from the heat and friction of the logs.  The truss bars allow the cap to be readily adjusted horizontally and vertically to keeps a constant parallel relationship between bar and knife throughout the entire length of the knife.  The knife bar is recessed to allow for stainless steel conveyor rolls very close behind the knife for the veneer.  A hydraulically controlled tilt pressure cap is available for ease of knife whetting.

New Computer Lead System

Capitals patented Computer Lead System can save up to 25 minutes per shift when used with the Capital Flitch Master feed and thickness system.  Faster round up can be attained with the computer feed and thickness system by starting thicker and then shifting on the fly to the thinner desired thickness

Our patented, Blue stain free – Distortion free system assures the proper parallel knife edge to the pressure bar.  This increases both production and yield and produces a higher quality veneer and eliminates blue stains on woods containing Tannic acid.  All surfaces that touch wood are stainless steel, UHMW, or non-ferrous to give a much longer working life and prevent blue stain.

Rift White or Red Oak without “Flake”

In lathes made elsewhere, the flitch is held by spindles so that the log meets the knife at only one angle.  This results in some slices with undesirable wood patterns, such as “flake”.  The Capital Staylog Lathe is the only machine in the world that can properly cut rift oak, without “flake.”  This is possible because Capital Staylog Lathes have the exclusive five position “fantail.”  The hydraulic staylog can be rotated on its own axis for the cutting of true rift white or red oak or comb grain wood.

The flitch on the Capital Staylog Lathe is held hydraulically on the staylog.  Unique holders allow the operator to adjust the flitch to five different angles.  He can start the cutting at one angle and change it from time to time as the knife approaches the center of the flitch to eliminate the flake caused by the meduallary rays in oak.

The Capital Staylog Lathe is a high volume machine, making 30 to 90 cuts per minute with a thickness accuracy of one thousandth of an inch (.025mm).  A rugged and simple Capital variable speed main drive motor is used to give a speed range of from 30 to 90 revolutions per minute.  Flitches are routinely changed  in 45 seconds or less on the half round.  An air brake is used on each end of the machine to stop the machine quickly.

Hydraulic Tilt Pressure Cap

All veneer slicers and lathes must be stopped from time to time to remove wood slivers, dirt, and debris and to whet the knife to eliminate nicks in the knife scratches on the veneer.  To reduce the amount of time needed for this periodic task, Capital engineers invented the Tilt Pressure Cap assembly.  It increases significantly the amount of veneers cut every working day by reducing the amount of downtime.  It allows easy access to the conveyor belts under the cap for adjustment of maintenance.

This system enables the machine operator to open and close the space between the knife and pressure bar in a few seconds to a maximum of 6 inches.  Then the operator quickly returns the pressure bar to its previous position in relation to the knife, very accurately.  No adjustment is needed because it pivots on Timkin taper roller bearings.

The Capital Staylog Lathe is built to meet your needs in knife length of 125″ (3175 mm), 148″ (3759 mm), and 154″ (3911 mm) .  It takes flitches up to 30 inches in radius.  Two grooves are milled into the face of the flitch by the grooving machine.  A reduced core diameter staylog is available, as an option for up to 13% more yield.
